Day 1: Arrival in Guwahati and Transfer to Bomdila
Early morning arrival in Guwahati and drive to Bomdila (8 hours) crossing into Arunachal Pradesh (permits arranged in advance). The drive climbs from plains to mountains with dramatic changes in vegetation and landscape. Reach Bomdila (2,217m) by evening and check into hotel. Brief orientation walk to acclimatize and witness sunset over Himalayan ranges. Evening briefing on local tribal cultures and upcoming experiences.
Day 2: Bomdila to Dirang
Morning visit to Bomdila Monastery complex with its colorful prayer hall and panoramic mountain views. Meet with monks to learn about Tibetan Buddhist practices. Drive to Dirang (2 hours) through mountain villages and apple orchards. Afternoon visit to Dirang Dzong, an old fortress village with traditional stone houses. Continue to National Yak Research Center to learn about these high-altitude animals crucial to mountain communities. Evening visit to hot springs followed by dinner featuring Monpa tribal cuisine.
Day 3: Dirang to Tawang
Early departure for spectacular drive to Tawang (6-7 hours) crossing Sela Pass (4,170m), one of India's highest motorable passes often surrounded by snow. Visit Sela Lake near the pass. Continue to Jaswant Garh War Memorial honoring the 1962 Indo-China war. Stop at Nuranang Waterfall (Jung Falls) before reaching Tawang (3,048m). Evening rest and acclimatization to the high altitude.
Day 4: Tawang Exploration
Morning visit to Tawang Monastery, India's largest Buddhist monastery founded in 1680, housing invaluable Buddhist scriptures and thangkas. Interact with young monk students. Continue to Urgelling Monastery, birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Afternoon visit to Tawang War Memorial commemorating the 1962 war. Drive to Pankang Teng Tso Lake surrounded by mountains. Evening visit to local Monpa village to witness traditional papermaking and carpet weaving.
Day 5: Tawang to Bomdila/Guwahati and Departure
Early morning attendance at monastery prayer ceremony (if schedule permits). Begin return journey with different village stops including Jang to see traditional Monpa homes. Drive back to Bomdila for overnight stay or continue to Guwahati (long 12-hour drive) for next-day departures depending on your preference and flight schedule.
